David Diaz's acrylic, collage-like illustration of the tale earned the book the 1995 Caldecott Medal. They added the book to the list as paving the way towards the genre of serious picture books. The book made the list of One Hundred Books that Shaped the Century compiled by the Staff at the School Library Journal. In the end, the cats teach their masters how to get along. The ongoing fires and looting force neighbors who previously disliked each other to work together to find their cats. It tells the story of a Los Angeles riot and its aftermath through the eyes of a young boy named Daniel. (Picture book.Smoky Night is a 1994 children's book by Eve Bunting. The song, based on a Xhosa lullaby, still has that hard-to-resist sing-along potential, and the themes of waging peace, collective action, and the benefits of sound ecological practices are presented in ways that children will both appreciate and enjoy. Seeger sums it up in a postscript: “every community must learn to manage its giants.” Hays, who illustrated the original (1986), creates colorful, if unfinished-looking, scenes featuring a notably multicultural human cast and a towering Cubist fantasy of a giant. How to avoid Abiyoyo’s destruction now? Sing the monster to sleep, then make it a peaceful, tree-planting member of the community, of course. But the rock that Abiyoyo obligingly flings aside smashes the wand. Call on Abiyoyo, suggests the granddaughter of the man with the magic wand, then just “Zoop Zoop” him away again. Faced with yearly floods and droughts since they’ve cut down all their trees, the townsfolk decide to build a dam-but the project is stymied by a boulder that is too huge to move. The seemingly ageless Seeger brings back his renowned giant for another go in a tuneful tale that, like the art, is a bit sketchy, but chockful of worthy messages. An outstandingly handsome book that represents its subject realistically while underplaying the worst of its horrors an excellent vehicle for discussion. Defined in heavy black, the expressionistically rendered faces are intense with smoky shades and dark, neon-lit color. Diaz's art - rough-edged acrylic paintings mounted on collages of paper, burnt matches, and materials that might be found blowing on a California street - is extraordinarily powerful. Kims' make friends at the shelter, the people realize that they, too, could be friendly. But they look happy, too." The story is rounded out with a touch of reconciliation: Mama has't patronized Kim's market (".it's better if we buy from our own people") but, after Daniel's cat and Mrs. They don't care anymore what's right.After a while it's like a game," while Daniel observes, "They look angry. Though Bunting offers no reasons for the violence, she succinctly describes the mob's psychology. When it quiets down the two fall asleep, only to be roused: their building is burning, so they escape, through ravaged streets, to a shelter. Standing well back from their window, Daniel and his mama watch looters steal TVs and break into Kim's market. A noted author ( Fly Away Home, 1991) brings all her empathy and creative skill to another timely topic: an inner-city riot.
